I wrote many of the songs on Best Self out of frustration with myself. "WHY CAN'T I GET MYSELF TO HUMAN LIKE ALL OF THE OTHER HUMANS?!" I would (and still) cry. Why can't I text back? Why can't I keep up? Why do I keep biting off more than I can chew? Why don't I learn?!

And then I found out that there are many reasons why I struggle to human like other humans. Namely, like many of us are realizing, ADHD is real, depression is real, and anxiety is stupid. I mean, REAL. And for those reasons, my best is going to look a heck of a lot different than the wakes-up-at-5am, fictional, yoga goddess/girl boss that I keep comparing myself to in my head. Heck, fictional yoga goddess/girl boss probably has her own comparison trap that she gets stuck in, too!

In a world that is more complicated than ever, why are we harder on ourselves than ever? And seemingly more bent on perfection? There are a lot of good reasons for that, I think, and they all begin and end with a system that is not very much interested in the wellness of the human spirit.

You are not crazy. THIS *gestures to everything* is crazy. You are doing your best, and I promise you that it is more than enough. I hope you know that, and I hope you listen to our album knowing with your whole heart how very, truly awesome YOU are.
